Chinese Culture Day at Kohia Terrace School” was held on 24th September with the traditional Chinese Moon Festival around the corner. The legendary story of the Moon Festival was performed on stage by the school kids. Besides, the intermediate students displayed the Lion Dance and Fan Dance in their glamourous costumes.  All these wonderful performances directed by Xu Shanshan, the Madarin Language Assistant(MLA), given by the school students won applause from the audience

A series of activities were held at Sacred Heart College to celebrate the “Confucius Institute Day” organized by Yang Jing, MLA at the school: 1. Teaching students “Qigong Baduanjin”(one of the most common forms of Chinese qigong used as exercise). 2. Making “Jiaozi”(Chinese dumpling commonly eaten on festive occasions). 3. Drawing the moon for classroom decoration in celebration of the forthcoming  Moon Festival.

Xu Liping, MLA at Milford school and Mairangi Bay School taught students to make colourful paper lanterns to celebrate the Moon Festival which fell on 27th September. The Students proudly and excitedly “showed off” their own handmade lanterns and thus celebrated the festival in their unusual way. At Mairangi Bay School, the students learned how to make Chinese Zodiac Calendar with the help of their Chinese teacher. They were very much impressed by the amazing stories behind the 12 animals each representing a month of a year.

Workshop of Chinese Mask Culture at Fairfield College, Hamilton, organized by Zheng Wei, our Mandarin teaching assistant from our Confucius Institute. It not only helped the students better understand the mask culture of ancient China which has a history of 4,000 years, but increases their interest in the Chinese language lessons as well.

To mark the first New Zealand Chinese Language Week as well as the Confucius Institute Day which fell in September , St Peter’sCollege has organized two weeks of Chinese cultural activities, and more than 500 students from Year 7 to Year 13 participated. SPC has the only Confucius Institute Secondary School classroom in Auckland, and our school values cross-cultural education. The main advantage of learning Mandarin is to promote our boys’ understanding of another culture and language, and also helps them appreciate their own cultural background. From 10th to 22nd September, Chinese teachers worked alongside Confucius Institute and other Chinese community groups, to organize some fun cultural activities such as Chinese handcrafts, martial arts (Gong Fu), and dumpling making. Students have been fully engaged and really enjoyed these activities. Year 9 student Tom Grayson noted that “it helped me understand Chinese culture better while also having a very fun time doing it”. Another Year 9 boy, Rohan Bhatt, said “this was a fabulous experience for me and I hope I can learn more about Chinese culture in future”.

Fashion Show of Chinese Characters at Lincoln Heights School
