Background

On 1 November, 2008, Nancy Marlin, Provost of San Diego State University, signed an agreement with Xiamen University in China for the establishment of a Confucius Institute at SDSU. The unveiling ceremony was held on 26 March, 2009 to officially announce the operation of CI at SDSU.

The current full-time and part-time staff in CI at SDSU totals 49, including 26 teachers and volunteers sent by CI Headquarters, 20 locally-recruited Chinese teachers, 2 American directors, 1 Chinese director and 6 American administrators.

Since the establishment of the CI at SDSU, approximately 9677 students have enrolled and registered in courses to learn Chinese language and culture.
