2016 In-service Training Workshop for Confucius Institute Directors kicks off in Xiamen

On July 3, the first In-service Training Workshop for Confucius Institute Directors of 2016, sponsored by Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and organized by Xiamen University (XMU), officially kicked off in Xiamen. A total of 41 foreign directors of Confucius Institutes from 31 countries of five continents attended this 9-day workshop. Guests attending and addressing the opening ceremony, which was hosted by XMU’s Vice President Ms. Zhan Xinli, included Mdm. Xu Lin, Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Director General of Hanban, and Mr. Zhu Chongshi, President of XMU. Also attending this ceremony were Ms. Jing Wei, Deputy Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Deputy Director General of Hanban, and Michael Kahn-Ackermann, distinguished professor and senior consultant of Confucius Institute Headquarters.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mdm. Xu Lin pointed out that the Confucius Institute has achieved its leapfrog development after 12 years of efforts. A total of 505 Confucius Institutes and 1,008 Confucius Classrooms at primary and secondary schools have been established in 139 countries and regions, with around 1.9 million registered students. By offering high-quality Chinese language teaching and presenting diverse and colorful cultural events, it has become an important window for exchanges between China and foreign countries and enjoyed enormous popularity among people of all countries. Noting that Confucius Institute Headquarters has been working on the Confucius Institute Action Plan (2016-2020), she invited all members of this workshop to offer their suggestions for further revision.

On behalf of Xiamen University, President Zhu Chongshi extended his warm welcome to all directors who traveled from far away for this workshop. He also presented XMU’s achievements in the development of Confucius Institutes. He made a special mention that the “‘21st Century Maritime Silk Road’ University Presidents Forum” was held at Xiamen University upon its 95th anniversary. Directors and chairs of boards of Confucius Institutes and presidents from 27 foreign universities attended this forum, and they conducted extensive and in-depth discussions and exchanges on a wide range of topics such as the development of Confucius Institutes. At last, President Zhu introduced the diverse events of the workshop and wished it a great success.

On behalf of all foreign directors, Alicia Relinque Eleta, Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Granada, Spain, also spoke at the opening ceremony. With fluent Chinese, she elaborated the remarkable achievements by Confucius Institutes in Spain over recent years and extended her sincere gratitude to Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) for its strong support. As a famous sinologist of Spain, Alicia Relinque Eleta translated several Chinese literary classics such asWen Xin Diao Long (The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons) and The Orphan of Zhao.

Consisting of four symposiums, two seminars and eight lectures, this training workshop focuses on two key issues, namely, challenges and measures in Confucius Institute’s integration into local universities and Sino-foreign cooperation as well as the planning of branded cultural events of Confucius Institutes. The Members will also discuss and explore ways to introduce and explain key programs of the Confucius Institute. This program will also invite renowned experts and scholars both home and abroad to offer lectures on such topics as contemporary China, experience sharing in organizing cultural events and management of Confucius Institutes.
